Having stuffed sinuses can be a huge pain. It makes it difficult to breathe, gives you headaches and can make it much harder to sleep. There are lots of things that can cause sinus pressure and pain. Use moisture to help loosen mucus. Making the air more humid with a humidifier can keep your sinuses from getting too dry. Take a steamy shower or sit in a steam room. You can also steam just your face. Pour hot water in a bowl. Hold your face six inches above it with a towel over your head. Stay there for a few minutes. As a bonus, this can also help clear your skin.
Keeping your sinuses moist will help your body drain them of mucus. Drinking fluids will help keep your entire body hydrated. Hot tea with honey and lemon will help your sinuses, and ease any throat pain you may be feeling. Drink multiple glasses of water throughout the day. Steer clear of caffeinated and alcoholic beverages, which can dehydrate you and make sinus pain even worse.
Flush Your Sinuses
This sounds gross, but it’s highly effective. You can clear out your sinuses by directly putting fluids into your nasal passageways. Use a saline wash to thin the mucus and flush it out. You can use a premade saline spray, but fully irrigating your sinuses can really clean them out. A Neti pot, bulb syringe or nasal irrigator does the trick. Use sterile water to make your solution, or boil water so it’s completely clean.
Hot and Cold Towels
Placing a warm, damp washcloth over your eyes and nose can help relieve pressure, loosen mucus and lessen sinus headaches. You can relieve both pressure and pain by alternating hot and cold compresses. Use the hot towel for about three minutes, then place a cold towel over your face for about 30 seconds. Repeat four times.
Eat Spicy Foods
It might be the last thing you want to eat while you have a stuffy nose, but something really spicy can help clear out mucus. They can open up nasal passageways, allowing mucus to drain and air to get in.
